Broadband - Looking To The Future

With such a range of broadband providers currently available to us - all of whom vying to secure our services with promises of fast connections for low prices. But with possibilities of fibre technology being discussed both in media and in parliament, what kind of services can we expect from providers in the future?

The majority of our broadband is streamed down copper wires - known as DSL - with the majority of cheap broadband providers operating their own equipment out of BT telephone exchanges using a technique known as Local Loop Unbundling (LLU)

But what other broadband technology options could be available to us in future?

Cable

Cable broadband technology is made up of three parts:

Modem at end user - connected to the customer's PC

TV network - which the signal flows through

Router at end user - which transfers the signal from the network to the connection at the end user

Unlike ADSL, connection by cable is not affected by distance from the exchange. The connection uses a mixture of copper and fibre technology and the system is always operational, giving end users the opportunity to receive the same speeds.

Fibre optic line

Fibre line technology - as the name suggests - utilises cables which contain tiny fibres in order to transmit digital information in the form of light signals. Unlike electrical signals - which are prone to signal interference from other nearby cables - light signals utilised in fibre optics can be sent at a higher frequency than the voltage down a copper line. Fibre lines are also unaffected by outside elements - so are not subject to the noise issues that plague copper wire technology. As fibre technology is expensive to manufacture and operate, cost could be seen as being the biggest problem with the idea of broadband by fibre technology, with estimates for implementation across the UK at up to 15 billion.

VDSL (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line)

VDSL utilises both copper and fibre technology in the circuit, with the connection between the exchange and the street cabinet using fibre optics in a process known as FTTC (or Fibre to the Cabinet) with the main connection from the cabinet deployed using copper wiring.

VDSL is capable of supporting a number of services over a single connection - including HDTV and VoIP technologies, as well a broadband connection. However, like current ADSL lines, connection speed is still distance dependent - with those closest to the exchange likely to get the fastest speeds.

ADSL2+

ADSL2+ is an extension of current ADSL lines, allowing for data rates to be doubled allowing for a faster broadband connection. The technology is closely linked to BT work on their core network; however the performance of such a service is dependent on distance and the age of internal wiring systems in older houses.

Wimax (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access)

A wireless technology that utilises antenna in order to send and receive signals linking broadband providers to the customer. This technology is used as the dominant infrastructure for broadband access in developing countries and remote areas, however landscape such as forests and mountains can also have an effect upon the signal.

Wireless Networking Made Easy - Learn How To Setup a Wireless Network At Home - Part One Of Three

The topic that comes up the most when people ask me about computers is wireless networking (also known as Wi-Fi - Wireless Fidelity, or WLAN - Wireless LAN). What does 802.11g mean? How do I configure my router? How can I leech off of my neighbor's wireless network? Since I'm running a technology blog, I thought I'd impart my knowledge on the technically-unsavvy (or the WLAN beginner). These tutorials are not for the super advanced networking guru, mind you, so don't take it as such! This will be a three-part article, broken down into the following parts:

What you'll need to setup a wireless network (the part you're reading now).

What the standards mean.

How to configure your wireless network once it's been setup.

We'll be practical here. I'm not going to bore you by going into detail about the out-dated wireless standards. You don't want to know about old technology that you can't buy anymore. Saying that, I will give you a single paragraph rundown on the origin of the terms IEEE and 802.11, because you'll see them throughout this three-part article.

What do the terms IEEE and 802.11 mean?

The incremental wireless standards are designated by a letter (e.g. b, g, n) after the numbers 802.11. It's called 802.11 because that was the name of the group formed to create the standard. You'll see the acronym IEEE as well, which means 'Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' - the organization that ultimately oversaw the 802.11 group and the creation of the wireless standard. The average consumer doesn't need to know anything more than that. Pretty straight-forward, no?

Shopping for your wireless network.

Now, lets talk about what you'll find when you shop for a wireless router. We'll start with what you'll need to setup a wireless network in your home - the basics. First, you'll need a wireless router. There are plenty of makes and models, but generally they do the same thing. I won't get into which is best, but I'll tell you what I use. My wireless router is made by D-Link, using the 'n' standard (more on standards later). The other major router manufacturers are NetGear, Linksys, Buffalo, Belkin and TRENDnet. Like I said though, they all do generally the same thing. Don't worry too much about the brand.

The next piece of equipment you'll need (or won't need) depends entirely on the computers you're going to be connecting to your new WLAN. If you'll be connecting a laptop, chances are you won't need any additional hardware for it, unless your laptop is more than 5 years old (in which case I'd suggest using it as a door-stop or anti-theft device, instead of a computer). Laptops come with built-in wireless NICs (network interface cards), so chances are you won't need to buy anything additional.

If you have a PC, you can either connect it wirelessly, or if it's in close proximity to the wireless router, you can use a network cable and plug it directly into the back of the device. If it's not close to the router, you'll need to purchase a wireless NIC. The brand doesn't absolutely need to be the same as the router, though I'd recommend it for compatibility sake. What you do have to watch for, however, is that the wireless NIC and the wireless router share the same standard. Most likely this will be 'n' or 'g'. Routers and wireless NICs are usually backwards-compatible. Meaning, they'll work on both standards (and previous standards as well).

You will need at least one network cable. This will be used to connect your router to whatever broadband device you're using (cable or DSL modem). You'll need a second cable if you want to connect your PC directly to the router. That's all as far as hardware goes. Just two - possibly three - pieces of hardware. It doesn't cost much to setup a WLAN. As I described above, the next article will be focused on the current Wi-Fi standards and what they mean. We'll get a little more technical there.

Broadband Vs Broaderband

Almost 90% of internet users in the UK use a broadband connection, with average speeds of 2-8 Mbps. But because of technology becoming more and more advanced, such speeds may soon be too slow. Fortunately, there are new systems being developed which could deliver super-fast broadband to our homes.

The first is the use of fibre optics instead of the current copper cables. These fibres can carry speeds between 50Mbps and 100Mbps both upstream and downstream, meaning that uploading files to your online storage could be just as fast as downloading media from a website. Fibre optic systems can be expensive, in the region of 15 billion, but it could well be a reality in a few years.

VDSL (Very high speed Digital Subscriber Line) is a cheaper option which combines the use of optics with copper. VDSL can handle high bandwidth applications like VoIP and HDTV, as well as general internet access. Rolling out VDSL across the country will involve building 90,000 cabinets to house the cables at street level and will give users speeds of around 30Mbps

Wi-Fi has been available in the UK for some time, but the next generation, WiMax, will be able to deliver high speeds, around 70Mbps, over much longer distances, approximately 50km, all without the use of cables. In many countries WiMax is the predominant broadband infrastructure, and it shouldn't be too long before it becomes as commonplace as Wi-Fi in the UK.

Cable was perhaps the first method of delivering broadband to homes, and the protocol used currently is DOCSIS 1.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification). Version 1.0 is capable of speeds of up to 38Mbps, and a version 3.0 is being trialled in parts of the UK, and noting speeds of 50Mbps. It's hoped that eventually, DOCSIS will deliver around 120Mbps. This system has another advantage; unlike current methods, the connection speed isn't reliant on being close to the local exchange, and speeds should be consistent among all users.

But while these systems are still widely unavailable, there are a variety of other options for any broadband customer wanting to get a faster connection. Take a broadband speed test to find out what your current connection speed is. Use the internet to compare broadband packages to see if you can get a better deal.

Will the iPod Touch Outsell The Nano?

To date, the iPod Nano is the world's most popular digital music player, easily outselling all other iPods. Public response to the Nano was overwhelming, with over a million units sold in it's first 17 days of release -- no other music player has seen such rapid growth. But with the introduction of the iPod family's newest member, the iPod Touch, will it overtake and outsell the Nano?

The iPod Touch is aesthetically similar to the iPhone. It features the same gorgeous 3.5 inch LCD display and slick casing. The only feature that differentiates the Touch from the iPhone is the lack of the phone function. It will definitely sell well (and will sell more than any other competing player), but it will not outsell the Nano.

While it is an attractive device, it's large size is not practical for many. It will not appeal to joggers and those with jobs requiring heavy physical activities as the Touch is a fairly fragile device. Dropping it may result in a dysfunctional LCD screen, rendering it completely useless.

The fact that there are no physical buttons for playback is enough to turn a lot of people away from the iPod Touch. To adjust volume or use any playback control, you'll need to press the sleep/wake button and the home button twice, where you'll then be presented with the on-screen controls. The lack of these buttons means that you'll no longer be able to adjust volume or skip songs while the iPod is in your pocket.

Broadband in Europe

According to a survey carried out across Europe, broadband usage has seen a rise of around 12% from statistics from 2006. The survey asked 150,000 households across Europe - with the exception of Malta - about their broadband habits. The survey showed that in the first three months of 2007, 54% of households had access to an internet connection, a rise from around 49% in 2006.

Results from the survey showed that around 42% of households in the EU now have access to a broadband connection. Percentages for households with access to the internet varied from country to country - from 19% in Bulgaria to 83% in the Netherlands.

Figures for the UK showed internet access had risen to around 67% - a rise of 4% compared to 2006 - and there has been a sharp rise in the percentage of broadband connections - rising to 57% from last year. With a number of broadband providers now on the market, consumers now have a wide choice of services available to them.

Whilst half of users had sent attachments with e-mails, around a quarter said they had used newsgroups, online discussions and chat rooms. One in ten of those surveyed had created their own web page, with a further 15% having used the internet for making phone calls.

The survey also showed details of the internet habits based on age and gender. Since the introduction of file-sharing and peer-to-peer networking, there have been constantly reported high profile legal struggles between the music industry and internet providers.

And now internet providers face potential changes to procedure due to a government green paper which would require them to take action over users who access pirated material.

It is estimated that around six million UK broadband users downloaded files illegally last year, with music and film industries claiming that such practices cost billions of pounds in lost revenue.

And with the government coming under increased pressure from those in the music and film industries to penalise piracy, users could find themselves paying the price for free downloads.

Negotiations between some of the biggest ISPs and some of Hollywood's biggest studios regarding a voluntary scheme for policing illegal downloads have been in progress for several years, however no deal has yet been reached.

Users suspected of illegally downloading music and films face the prospect of a 'three strikes and you're out' system, which could ultimately lead to the disconnection of their broadband service if no steps are taken to cease illegal activity.

However there is growing concern about how disputed allegations would be policed. With an increasing number of cases of 'piggybacking' and 'wi-fi hijacking' as the numbers of wireless broadband networks around the UK continues to grow, there could be difficulties in determining blame in some cases.

The green paper also outlines plans for schemes that would promote creative arts in the UK in a bid to encourage children to visit galleries and museums, attend theatre productions and take up study of a musical instrument.
